The Map and the Territory, 50"x38", acrylic, graphite, charcoal on paper
The Map and the Territory is part of a body of work that explores both inner and outer states of consciousness and expression with the concept that there is both a 'map' of these experiences as well as an ineffable and inexhaustible territory to be explored. My solo exhibition of this work is at the Marjorie Evans Gallery at the Sunset Center in Carmel, CA in January 2015. Opening reception: January 8, 2015 from 5-7 pm.
I paint from an improvisational and guttural place. Inhabiting an attitude of allowing and not knowing, I activate the canvas with spontaneous marks. I respond with paint that alternately asserts and obliterates the space. I aspire to paint with the unfiltered expression and rawness of a child. This new work is on view at Pablo Milan Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It will also be featured in the Spring 2015 edition of Studio Visit magazine.
I have recently slipped the bonds of a long history of representational work and set off into the abstract unknown. My previous body of work, consisting mostly of figures and landscapes, has given me the map and compass to explore this new terra incognita. I am full of the excitement and anticipation that the mariners of old must have felt when their familiar port receded over the horizon. I am reminded of one of my favorite lines of poetry by Keats: “I am certain of nothing but the holiness of the hearts’ affections and the truth of the imagination”. I paint from that place of not knowing.
I am interviewed along with several artists from the Southern Lights workshop at the Bascom Center for the Arts, Highland, NC. Click here to see it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXL9WatDL0s
