Contemporary Painting and Collage

If Wishes Were Horses - Acrylic

This new work is an exploration of intuitive, improvisational painting and calligraphic mark making in a field of deep, saturated, modern colors. It is on view at Pablo Milan Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Recently, I have slipped the bonds of a long history of representational work and set off into the abstract unknown. This work is an exploration of intuitive painting and mark making. It is a visceral, vigorous process that is raw and full of surprises. My previous body of work, consisting mostly of figures and landscapes, has given me the map and compass to explore this new terra incognita. Nonetheless, animals and humans have recurrently appeared to my astonishment.  I am full of the excitement and anticipation that the mariners of old must have felt when their familiar port receded over the horizon. I am reminded of one of my favorite lines of poetry by Keats: “I am certain of nothing but the holiness of the hearts’ affections and the truth of the imagination”. I hope to paint from that place of not knowing.
